As of 5 Oct 2026, 17:35What does Heidelberg Materials do?
Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s largest building materials companies. It makes cement, sand, gravel and ready-mixed concrete in around 50 countries. Until 2022 it was called HeidelbergCement. Making cement releases a lot of CO2, so the company is investing in technology that captures that CO2 and stores it underground.
The street outside your door, a motorway bridge or your apartment building may well contain cement or concrete from Heidelberg Materials.

Strengths
- Quarries and cement plants are very hard to build from scratch, which keeps new rivals out.
- Spread across many countries, especially Europe and North America.
- A pioneer in carbon capture: in 2025 it opened the cement industry’s first plant of this kind in Brevik, Norway.
Risks
- When construction slows down, demand for cement and concrete falls too.
- Rising CO2 prices in the EU can push costs up sharply.
