Frühstart-Rente calculator: what will my child get?
Enter your child's year and month of birth. You instantly see whether your child qualifies under the current draft law, when the state starts paying and how much. Below: what it could grow to by 18 and by 67, with and without family top-ups.
Draft law (Drs. 21/7864), as of Oct 9, 2026. Bundestag vote on Oct 16, 2026.
Does my child qualify?
Yes, your child qualifies.
The state pays 10 € every month, from Jun 2026 to May 2038. That is 144 months, €1,440 in total.
- The 7 months of 2026 are paid backdated once the law applies (planned from 1 January 2027).
- You do not file an application. If you open a standard depot in your child's name, the provider applies for the money, from 2027 at the earliest.
- If the application arrives by the end of 2027, every payment goes straight into the depot. Without a depot, or later, the state invests the money in a pooled fund. It then arrives in the depot with its gains as starting capital.

Why do the numbers get so big?
The state never pays more than 1,440 €. The rest is compound interest: after the 18th birthday the money stays invested for about 50 more years. Small differences in return become huge over that time, which is why the calculator shows 3, 5 and 7 %. None of these numbers is promised. All the rules, the criticism of the draft and the open questions are on our Frühstart-Rente topic page.
The money is locked until retirement. If you want to save for a driving licence or university, you need something else, such as a regular kids investment account. Our comparison of kids investment accounts shows the differences. For yourself, the subsidised Altersvorsorgedepot starts in 2027. The Altersvorsorgedepot calculator works out what the state adds there.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to apply for the Frühstart-Rente?
No. You do not file an application yourself. If you open a certified standard depot in your child's name, the provider applies for the 10 € a month at the central subsidy office of Deutsche Rentenversicherung. You can object to this before signing. If you open no depot, the state invests the money for your child in a pooled fund.
Which children get the Frühstart-Rente?
Children born in 2020 or later, from the month of their 6th birthday to the month before their 18th. They need a main residence in Germany and a German tax ID. School attendance is not a condition in the draft. Children born in 2019 or earlier get no state money under the draft.
When does the Frühstart-Rente start?
The planned start is 1 January 2027. The 2020 cohort gets the money for 2026 backdated, from the month of the 6th birthday. The 2021 cohort starts in 2027, and every later cohort in the year it turns 6. Money is paid quarterly in arrears. Nothing is final yet: the Bundestag votes on Oct 16, 2026, then the Bundesrat deals with it.
Can we pay in ourselves?
Yes. Parents, grandparents or the child may add up to 6,840 € a year. There is no subsidy for this, and parents cannot deduct it from tax. Gains stay tax-free until payout. The part built from own contributions can be cancelled, the state money cannot.
What happens to the money at 18?
State payments end in the month before the 18th birthday. The money stays invested and belongs to your child, but it is generally paid out only from 65. From 18 your child can move the whole balance to another certified retirement contract and keep saving there. If the money sat in the state pooled fund, your child needs their own contract by their 35th birthday, otherwise it goes back to the state.
How much do 10 € a month become?
The state pays 1,440 €. What it grows to depends on the return. By 67 it is about €7,300 at 3 % a year after costs, about €21,300 at 5 % and about €61,000 at 7 %. The often quoted 53,000 € assume 7 % until 65. Tax and inflation are not deducted, and nobody guarantees a return.
