What does Siemens do?

Munich-based Siemens is one of Europe’s largest technology companies. It supplies controls and software for factories, technology for buildings and power grids, trains such as Germany’s ICE, and, through its subsidiary Healthineers, medical equipment. Software matters more and more: it lets companies design and test products and factories on a computer first.

Where you know it from

On a Deutsche Bahn ICE you are riding a Siemens train. And the MRI scanner at the hospital often comes from its subsidiary Siemens Healthineers.

Strengths

  • Very broadly diversified: weakness in one area is often offset by another.
  • A leader in automation and industrial software, recently strengthened by acquisitions.
  • Benefits from the build-out of power grids and data centers.

Risks

  • The factory business depends on the economy and was weak in fiscal 2025.
  • Siemens plans to spin off 30 percent of the Healthineers shares to its own shareholders. Afterwards the group will look quite different.
  • Competition from China and trade conflicts weigh on its international business.
