In short
As of 8 October 2026Trading hours are the times when a venue trades securities. On XETRA, main trading runs Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:30 German time, with extra retail trading from 8:00 to 22:00. US exchanges usually trade from 15:30 to 22:00 German time. Outside main hours, spreads are often wider.
Every trading venue has fixed hours. On XETRA, main trading runs Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:30 German time, and since December 2025 retail investors can also trade from 8:00 to 22:00. Many other German venues trade roughly from 8:00 to 22:00, some even longer.
US exchanges such as the Nasdaq open from 9:30 to 16:00 New York time, usually 15:30 to 22:00 in Germany. Because the clocks change on different dates, this shifts for a few weeks a year.
Example: you buy a German stock at 21:00. That works, but the spread is often wider than during the day because less is traded. A limit order lets you set the most you are willing to pay.
