The name often also refers to an index: the Nasdaq Composite with more than 3,000 stocks, or the Nasdaq-100 with the 100 largest non-financial companies. The Nasdaq-100 is tech-heavy and fluctuates more than the S&P 500.
The Nasdaq is an electronic stock exchange in New York. It lists especially many technology and growth companies, such as Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia. Trading runs from 9:30 to 16:00 New York time, usually 15:30 to 22:00 German time.
"The Nasdaq" often refers to an index: the Nasdaq Composite holds more than 3,000 stocks listed there. The Nasdaq-100 covers the 100 largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq. It is dominated by tech stocks and therefore fluctuates more than the S&P 500.
Example: in 2022 the Nasdaq-100 lost about a third of its value, much more than broad world indices. Betting only on tech means taking on high concentration risk.
