As of 8 October 2026

The SDAX is a German stock index of 70 smaller companies that rank below the 50 MDAX members. The S stands for small caps. It is weighted by the market value of freely tradable shares. SDAX stocks can grow faster than large corporations, but they usually fluctuate more and trade less.

The SDAX contains 70 smaller German companies that rank below the members of the MDAX. The S stands for small caps. As with the DAX and MDAX, the market value of freely tradable shares counts.

Small caps such as those in the SDAX can grow faster than large corporations, but usually fluctuate much more. Many trade less, so the spread is often wider. Strong SDAX firms move up into the MDAX; weak ones can drop out of the index family altogether.

Example: an SDAX ETF holds 70 companies, yet it is still heavily concentrated on Germany. The chapter on risk and diversification explains why spreading across countries and sectors helps.
