What does Commerzbank do?

Frankfurt-based Commerzbank serves two groups: private customers and small business owners who need accounts, loans or a brokerage account, and companies it supports with credit, payments and foreign trade. By its own account, it handles around 30 percent of the financing of Germany’s foreign trade. The group also includes comdirect and Poland’s mBank.

Where you know it from

You’ll find Commerzbank branches in many German city centres, and many people opened their first brokerage account at comdirect.

Strengths

  • Close ties to German mid-sized companies and a strong role in export finance.
  • Revenue rose about 10 percent in 2025 to more than 12 billion euros.
  • mBank in Poland is growing strongly and adds to profits.

Risks

  • Italy’s UniCredit made a takeover offer in 2026 and, once approved, will hold just under half of the voting rights. What happens after that is still open.
  • Falling interest rates squeeze net interest income, its biggest source of revenue.
  • A weak German economy raises the risk of loans going bad.
