Fractional share (Bruchstück)
Part of a share or ETF unit, for example 0.25, as created by savings plans.
In short
As of 8 October 2026A fractional share is part of a share or ETF unit, such as 0.25. Fractions mostly arise in savings plans with fixed amounts. Economically, the part belongs to you, including dividends. However, voting rights and transfers to another brokerage account are often restricted.
If you invest a fixed amount each month through a savings plan, you usually do not buy whole units. With 50 euros and a price of 200 euros, you get 0.25 of a share. These parts are called fractional shares (German: Bruchstücke).
Many neobrokers and banks hold fractions in pooled positions. Economically your part belongs to you, including dividends. There are often limits on voting rights and on a securities transfer: fractions frequently cannot be moved and must be sold.
Example: with 25 euros a month you can invest in an expensive stock too. After a year you might hold 1.37 shares, one whole share and 0.37 as a fraction.
